The Sargent House Museum

About The Sargent House Museum

For over 100 years, the Sargent House Museum was the home of sea merchants, patriots and community leaders. A fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture, the house was built in 1782 for Judith Sargent Stevens Murray (1751-1820), a philosopher, writer and an early advocate of women's equality.

Visitors to the Sargent House Museum learn about the early history of Gloucester from its beginnings as a farming and lumbering outpost to its evolution into the country's premier seaport. Visitors will also see a collection of original works by the great portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) descendant of the Sargent family, who loved the house and its ties to Post-Revolutionary Gloucester.

Internship

June 2018 - August 2018 Gloucester, MA
“I liked how we got to work on historical artifacts, and learn about the life of Judith Sargent Murray, a local historical figure who wrote "On The Equality of The Sexes" in 1790. In the internship, a few other interns and I worked to help out with a new project where we found some items in storage and worked to create a new display by researching each item found and putting it in an unused room which now can be toured with the rest of the museum. I like that particular group project of ours as we got to contribute something entirely new to the museum's displays. ”
