The Public Theatre

About The Public Theatre

The Public Theatre is a 315 seat Equity theatre in Central Maine. We operate under an SPT (category 9) contract with Actors' Equity Association, producing from Oct - May. Each season we offer Internships in Directing, Stage Management, and Acting.

Please see posted jobs for available internships. You may view the possible internship opportunities here: http://www.thepublictheatre.org/education/internships/

All interns receive a hands-on education. As The Public Theatre operates under the guidance of a small staff, there is no bureaucracy to get lost in and every effort is valued. Interns are assured of receiving individual tasks and individual attention. Our interns work and study with professionals and have an opportunity to become an integral part of The Public Theatre. Most internships are a 4 -5 week commitment and interns are eligible to receive EMC points.

Compensation and Credit. For college students course credit can often be arranged for internships. Housing for interns may be provided if needed. Each intern receives a small stipend. The Public Theatre operates under a Small Professional Theatre contract with Actor's Equity Association, and Equity membership points are available for those interested.

Remote General Production Intern

May 2020 - August 2020 New York City, NY
“My supervisors were fantastic. Even though all in-person activities were suspended they made sure we had a meaningful virtual experience. We met once a week to discuss changes in the industry and network with other members of the company. They also set up one on one informational interviews for us.”

Usher/ Stage Monitor

“Being able to witness the way my favorite theatre in the world was run. Meeting people who worked in all different departments of the theatre from actors, to box office managers to the people who rigged all the lights. ”
