The Museum of Modern Art

Communications Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The internship provided wonderful exposure to the inner workings of a major non-profit arts institution. I loved my department, which was extremely accommodating and willing to teach me skills that I had not learned in the classroom. The internship program included a lecture and activity series involving many departments across the museum, fostering a cross-departmental perspective of the permanent collection. It was also amazing to work at a museum that is so deeply entrenched in New York, embedded in the landscape of the city itself and perpetually working to increase accessibility with audiences from across the world.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a return-offer or some means of transitioning the internship into a full-time position.

Advice

It is important to volunteer help and step up to any opportunity, as this opened many doors to opportunities that weren't necessarily initially assigned to me.

What I liked

Living in NYC, working in a museum, and meeting other arts laborers introduced me to so many ways of being involved with the arts and many critical conversations around these roles for individuals and institutions.
