Compliance Intern

What I liked

The people at Mercadien were extremely helpful with any questions I had. My department had a good mix of personalities that I could ask questions about the job, life as an accountant, the CPA test, Master's School, etc. I was able to do a lot of hands on work and dive into the compliance profession. What I did at Mercadien, I wouldn't be able to do anywhere else because it was an engagement that Mercadien was hand picked by the NJ government. I cherished my time spending learning and networking with my co-workers during the summer.

What I wish was different

Although this was at no fault of Mercadien, work was a bit slow due to contracts not being approved by the government. I found myself not having a lot of work due to no engagements happening. Mercadien did try to accommodate me as best as possible to give me any sort of work to do and I appreciate them trying to keep me busy doing valuable work.

Advice

Although Mercadien is not a Big 4 company, it was a great place to intern due to the professionalism and opportunities I was able to have at Mercadien. I learned a lot about accounting and my possible career path in a mid-sized firm. The culture and people is something that I appreciated and am extremely thankful for everyone taking the time to know me and teach me valuable lessons for my future.

What I liked

I enjoyed getting the hands on experience and learning a new side to accounting, which was compliance. I liked that I was able to go on client inspection all across New Jersey and learn about the New Jersey Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services Program.
