What I liked

The internship program exposes you to many aspects of the company, with lectures from senior leaders in all fields. Strong mentors are provided to each student to help guide them through their work, which provided real value to the company. The program also featured social events to get to know the other interns.

What I wish was different

At times there was a lack of communication between the heavily populated downtown Chicago office and the interns at the R&D center in Glenview. Could also have used more time to work on my project.

Advice

Take advantage of all that is offered to you. You will have the opportunity to meet the top executives at the company, ask them questions. Get to know other departments besides the one you were placed in,

I stayed busy and always had something to do to pass the time.

What I wish was different

Have a set work schedule and have set days off.

Advice

Be prepared to work weekends and 12 hour shifts. There is a potential for weeks straight without having a day off.

What I liked

Loved that even though it was virtual I got one of the best internship experiences. I still felt like I learned a lot and really got to experience the company culture and people. Would not have changed anything.

Advice

Apply to many different internships and cast a wide net, you'll never know what will land. Specifically for KHC, be prepared to have a lengthy interview process, but it is worth it!

What I liked

Great people, very impactful work. Definitely recognized for your accomplishments, and a fast-paced but not too demanding work environment. Good place to learn, advance quickly, and make a splash in a large company.

What I wish was different

HR is still striking the balance between work and intern programming. Keep going, guys--almost got it!

Advice

Don't be afraid to put more on your plate to prove yourself and get noticed by management, provide input to your team, or suggest other ways of doing things. Also, please reach out to the higher-ups! Kraft-Heinz is a pretty flat hierarchy effectively, and it's easy for an intern to get a coffee chat with a director or above. Take advantage!

R&D Intern

What I liked

KraftHeinz has a great intern program that allows you to take ownership of a project within the company that directly impacts it. Employees are very open to meeting with and helping interns with their projects and career goals in general. It is a great way to get experience in a CPG company and led to me returning post-graduation into their Trainee Program. They paid for housing, travel costs, and had a very competitive salary for a summer intern program.

What I wish was different

The program gave many opportunities for case studies and challenges within the cohort, but often presented them as competitions and announced winners. This is a large part of the KraftHeinz culture, owning your work and being the best everyday, but I don't think that this is a positive culture to promote learning and inclusion, especially when the company prides themselves on really trying to maximize the potential of each individual. I also felt like everyone was from the same three schools which was more difficult when trying meet people initially.

Advice

Network with people within your direct group but also branch out to cross-functional group members to learn more about their experiences. They want to talk and help you grow your skills so take advantage of that. Go to happy hours and connect with the other interns outside of work.

What I liked

The HR team was great about communication amid everything becoming virtual. They still were able to place everyone on impactful projects and help us in the transition. Everyone is super nice, welcoming, and willing to help! The CMT Program is a cohort of 40 which has been a great experience.

What I wish was different

The early sections of the recruitment process didn't give too many insights into the company.

Make sure you show your personality throughout the interview process and know why you want to work here.

Operations Intern

What I liked

Interns have a lot of ownership over their project, but are still fully supported. It was exciting for me to (virtually) go to work everyday because I really enjoyed the procurement project that I was assigned. Huge kudos to the UR team and teams for doing a great job with project matching, and setting everyone up for success for the final report-out. I also loved my team's culture so that was the cherry on the top.

What I wish was different

There are four Excel training challenges that everyone has to do, and many interns may already have some of that background knowledge. It may be more efficient to let students skip the learning session and beginner exercises and only do the Excel challenge worksheets and network in that free time instead.

Advice

Network!!!!! You'll be surrounded by a bunch of people who are smarter than you, so take advantage of the opportunity to speak to them! Everyone is so open to chatting, so go drop times on people's calendars every few days and learn about a new part of the organization. And don't only chat with your team because you never know where you may end up in the future or where open roles may be.

Marketing/Sales Trainee

What I liked

Interviews: The third round interview involved being invited to Chicago to present to a senior board of executives. This was very exciting and exemplifies how much this company values their interns/trainees! Training: We had a month long training before we started our first rotation. This training included: Excel sessions, networking opportunities with high level executives, and case studies. Projects: The project I was placed on has a direct impact on the business. My manager encourages me to accomplish my goals and puts things in my project according to my interests and areas for growth. This job is perfect for those who don't know exactly what they want to do yet but want to work with their favorite brands and make a real impact!

What I wish was different

I wish we would be in person, due to COVID-19 we are working remotely. However, I was extremely impressed with how adaptive the University Relations team was and has made the program just as we were promised and I could not be more thankful to be here!

Advice

Go to every networking event the company you are interested in hosts! The more people you meet and the more you learn about the company, it will be easier to make your decision on where you want to work.

What I liked

The internship program exposes you to many aspects of the company such as leadership presentations from senior leaders in different areas of the business, a project that you can really own and drive real change in the company as well as access to different professional development and social networking events. The UR team really strives to make the opportunity fruitful for all of their interns and takes in feedback from previous years to improve the program the following year.

What I wish was different

I wish that some of the excel challenges and case studies would be more towards the beginning of the internship so that the workload is not a lot when you are trying to wrap up the project.

Advice

You really own your project so ask lots of questions and go above and beyond what is asked of you. If you go in really open and willing to work hard, you will not only see your project flourish but you will also learn a lot and take a lot of away from the overall experience.

Summer Intern

What I liked

The culture here is unreal. Even though we had to be completely virtual because of COVID, the University Relations team still were extremely helpful in making the program as valuable as it was. You get tasked with massive projects you get to own and also have UR sanctioned learnings, networking events, etc. to really grasp the company as a whole.

Advice

Network, network, network! Everyone is super willing to talk/help. Always ask questions, because your project will be huge and you will need to learn a lot to be successful!
