The Fresh Market

Bakery Clerk

June - December 2021 • Tulsa, OK

What I liked

I enjoyed the packaging, stocking, and creative aspects. My coworkers were great and supportive. They really made the job better.

What I wish was different

I wish management had been more involved and supportive. The training wasn't as great as it could have been. Scheduling was awful.

Advice

Leave your work at work. Don't think about what you have to do the next day.

Management intern

May - August 2021 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

How well the fresh market was able to work with their interns. How I was able to learn the daily routines of a general manager and get not only hand on experience everyday, but corporate experience on Zoom because their corporate office is in Greensboro.

What I wish was different

The summer I did tony internship was their first time having an internship program so I wish that I had done it another summer.

Advice

Never be afraid to get out of your comfort zone! I had never been to Nashville before and I was able to speed 10 weeks in a new city not knowing anyone. It was so rewarding and I found out a lot about myself along with getting a great internship experience.

Meat department associate

June - August 2020 • Greenville, SC

What I liked

I learned a lot about meat and how food is handled. I learned about the inner workings of a grocery store.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been paid more.

Advice

All people are equal. Many of these people worked at Fresh Market full-time and supported families. They were often treated rudely by customers and unappreciated.

I enjoyed working with my coworkers and helping people out. I also enjoyed getting into the flow of work.

What I wish was different

I wish my managers had staffed us better for closing. We had some irresponsible staff that just wouldn't show up.

Grocery Clerk

June 2018 • Scarsdale, NY

What I liked

I liked being on my feet and the constant movement. I had been a cashier at another grocery chain for a few years and always I felt restless standing at my post for 8 hours at a time. I like feeling tired after a shift at TFM because it feels like I did something productive and pushed myself.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spent less time there at night. 95% of the days I worked was from 4:00 to closing time (9PM) and sometimes I would not leave work until 11:30. It made it a challenge to have a life outside of work.

Advice

Just be able to listen and follow directions to the beat of your abilities. If you're working in grocery, being able to manage your time on the job is necessary if you want to complete the tasks that the manager sets before you, before you have to leave for the day.

Cashier

July 2018 • Towson, MD

What I liked

The atmosphere was very vibrant and I was able to meet so many different people, cultures, families and hardworking adults, day in and day out.

What I wish was different

The pay wasn’t the best and after a sudden manager shift in almost all of the departments, the store started going downhill in service and food quality.

Advice

Managers are what make workers want to work hard so if there is better management then you will get better service from your employees.
