The Corning Museum of Glass

Volunteer Engagement Intern

June - August 2019 • Corning, NY

What I liked

I loved my bosses. They were great to work with and really helped me develop professional skills when working with the volunteers, both the teens and the adults. I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the museum itself: it is a diverse museum in a small upstate town so you get a wide range of opinions and outlooks!

What I wish was different

I would have liked more things to do, but my boss (Jessica Trump) also made sure to add more to my plate when I finished a task.

Advice

Be prepared to work with a multitude of opinions and give an open mind about the experience! It is truly an amazing internship and one I thoroughly enjoyed having!

What I liked

I enjoyed working with people of all ages and answering any questions they had about the area or the museum.

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing! I had a great experience, I learned different methods of using glass for art as well as learning shipping and handling experience.

Advice

Even if you think it's working a summer job, it has got great connections from the people who work there that have experience, its nice to be able to converse with someone with similar interests.

What I liked

I liked working in a creative environment for the summer, also they were very flexible with scheduling and understood when I could not come into work.

What I wish was different

I wish they had been more clear about their expectations for their workers. A lot of things were implied but were also unique to what they needed, this caused some issues with customers. I also wish I had been formally trained instead of being thrown into the job, and trained by on of the other summer workers.

Advice

Ask a ton of questions, and take a break when you absolutely have to. Also it gets very hot, because of the glass furnaces so drink lots of water and wear the right clothing.
