The Children's Museum of Indianapolis

School Services Intern

May - August 2021 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

This was my first internship and the program was perfect for it. The work was worthwhile and challenging, but all the mentors and people who worked there where incredibly helpful. All staff members know you will need help and that you are looking for learning experiences and go out of their way to provide those. I had different employees from different divisions go out of their way to schedule meetings and opportunities for my learning. Also, it is just a fun place to work.

What I wish was different

Because of COVID, the professional development meetings had to be pushed to virtual meetings. It would have been nice to meet with the other interns and PD speaker in person, but that couldn't be controlled.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask around for help / meet as many new people as you can. Have fun.

Digital Marketing Intern

What I liked

I would argue this is one of the best nonprofit internship programs in the city. Beyond having a unique hands-on learning experience in the biggest children's museum in the world, the actual internship program is great because they ensure you meet all of your goals, receive additional professional development, and are matched with the right program and mentor at the museum.

What I wish was different

It would be great if the entire program could be paid, but you can earn a stipend at the end of the summer if you work a certain number of hours. That being said, it is still better than a completely unpaid internship.

Advice

Trust the process. Whether you are accepted to the program the first time or not, I suggest continuing to apply and figuring out how to improve your cover letter and resume each time. The internship program supervisor is also really good at matching people with the right program for them, so trust that you are going to end up in the right place. And finally, if you are accepted, make the most out of the experience and learn as much as you can from anyone you can. (Everyone is super nice and willing to help)

What I liked

It was my first professional experience in the field I am majoring in, so that was really exciting. I loved the people and how welcoming they were. I loved performing for children, it was really rewarding to see how much they enjoyed the show.

What I wish was different

I wish I didn't have to commute an hour there and back from Anderson everyday and that I would have gotten a gas stipend.

Advice

Don't be scared to jump into new environments and get to know new people. I was terrified the first day, but by the end of the summer I had made some amazing friends and made a professional connection.
