What I liked

I loved the community! I worked in the front, but I got to meet staff from the kitchen and the bar. We depended on each other and had fun working.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to keep up with the late hours. As a student, this was hard.

Advice

I would advise oncoming workers to relax, enjoy the cakes, and be kind to everyone you encounter! You’re gonna need them :)

Restaurant Host/Hostess

June - August 2019 • Marina del Rey, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the active work environment, friendly co-workers, and the fact that two days on the job were never the same. The hours were flexible and the general manager was exceptional - always welcoming and open to hearing my concerns. This is a great first job for students and a very fun summer job for anyone.

What I wish was different

I felt that I was often given too many tasks to attend to at once and often felt overwhelmed. This specific restaurant also had issues with scheduling and reprimanded me for having to leave during my "out" time. The restaurant could also improve on recognizing hard work and giving more appreciation to its employees. I also believe hosts should not have to clean the restrooms since they occasionally have to handle food and are always in direct contact with menus.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up to the General Manager if something is wrong, pay close attention to memorizing tables and asking questions during training, and stay busy by completing side jobs in the spare time. To advance to being a server, voice your desire to the GM.
