What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I worked with. I also enjoyed the opportunities and resources that were provided to me. It’s a fast paced work environment and things can get hectic at times, but it is so rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish my time there was longer.

Advice

Always ask questions if you are unsure about something. Never assume a task that has been given to you. The information you publish will be used in important documents. You want to make sure you understand the task you have been given and that you put your best effort into your research.

Research Intern

What I liked

The tasks I was completing of work were not administrative in nature, and many of the events and briefings we organized were so cool to learn about and attend. My bosses were very nice and helpful.

What I wish was different

Although it was great that administrative tasks were generally not a part in my work, many of my tasks were monotonous.

Advice

Make sure you reach out to anyone and everyone you can during an internship! Make the most of your connections.

What I liked

I loved getting to meet the Carters and the many influential people who work at The Carter Center. I liked how there were lots of interns there and how much responsibility and freedom I had in my projects.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship provided a stipend, or at least covered transportation and some housing.

Advice

Atlanta is difficult to navigate without a car! At the internship, asking for more (or a particular type of) work really pays off. I also strongly recommend conducting informational interviews with the many incredible people who work there.

Work hard each day and leave it all on the table. Do informational interviews with as many people as possible.

Educational Program Intern

What I liked

I love how this internship has been a laboratory of discovering who I am, what my skills are and where I need to improve. Through my internship, I have discovered that I love working with data in Excel. I have adopted a more efficient writing and editing process and I'm developing my research strategies. I cherish the feedback I get from my supervisors who love watching me grow, and I'm constantly challenging myself.

What I wish was different

Internships do require a time commitment that makes going back and forth between school and a position challenging. I wish I would have taken the semester off from school to work the internship full time and completely immerse myself in the job setting.

Advice

Internships are not like school in the sense that you can measure how you are doing based on grades or expected automatic feedback. In an internship or a job, you have to ask for feedback and more importantly, you have to also allow yourself to be vulnerable to constructive criticism so you can grow.

Intern

What I liked

The work was substantive, the office culture was fantastic, and fellow interns organized great social events. The office took us to meet the Carters, on a trip to President Carter's hometown, and invited us to various speaker series and events. I also was able to travel overseas with the Carter Center.

What I wish was different

Nothing. Seriously, it was awesome.

Advice

Absolutely apply to this, the Democracy Program is particularly excellent, and if you show the people here that you're willing and able to do the work they'll give you interesting and substantive projects.
