The BHW Group

Mobile Intern

June 2020 • Austin, TX

What I liked

If you want to learn everything about modern web and cross-platform mobile development from super experienced mentors, this is the place for you. Unlike other companies, BHW really values its interns and wants them to have the best experience possible. You'll get to work with your fellow interns on a single development project from scratch, which provides you with incredible educational and practical experience. BHW feels more like a close-knit friend group than a company—the people at BHW love working there with each other and you will too.

What I wish was different

Can't complain at all about BHW, but I do wish the experience could have been in-person as opposed to remote. Yet, in spite of the circumstances, BHW did everything they could to provide a great experience for the interns by hosting weekly Zoom game nights, book club meetings, and more!

Advice

Your mentors have a wealth of knowledge and are always willing to spend time teaching you or pointing you to the right resources, so ask questions often and try to learn the most you can from them. They really want to help you cultivate your skills and reach your potential.

What I liked

From the flexible work schedule and paid lunches to the close knit work environment, it is hard to beat the experience you can find at BHW. Not only did the experience refine my development skills, but also my professional skills. The people here care and want the best for you. In each member at BHW, you can find a friend and mentor.

What I wish was different

Despite the fact that the internship could not have been in person, there is nothing that I did not like about this experience. The team did a fantastic job of adapting to the work from home work style and giving the interns as best of an experience from home. 1 on 1's with full time employees and calls with other interns made this work from experience a lot less isolating than it could have been.

Advice

If you are looking to be a "Swiss Army knife" type of developer, this is the place for you. The skills and advice I gained here translated into my classes making them a piece of cake.

What I liked

I liked working with the intern team and having an opportunity to add my input to the design and development of the product. I felt like I learned a lot about maintaining a clean codebase, communication, and app development in general. The team at the BHW Group was very supportive and collaborative throughout the summer - ensuring I still had mentorship and 1-on-1's with senior devs and managers despite the remote format.

What I wish was different

Obviously would have liked an in-person experience. Some days could be more isolating if I wasn't working on something directly with another intern.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out regarding technical issues or concerns about the internship. Your experience is valued by the team so they're pretty open to all kinds of questions.

What I liked

Lots to learn, you get to build an application with other interns from the ground up, flexible hours so you can work remote for a bit before going into work or work late to avoid traffic

What I wish was different

Some people prefer companies with more people - this company is growing but is still very small compared to other places

Advice

Definitely apply and seriously consider it if you get an offer - there's a ton of opportunities to learn about new technology and get more involved in the company
