Advice

One piece of advice I would give is networking; there is such a diverse faculty and student network available to us as interns, and meeting with people and learning their backgrounds/perspectives is invaluable.

What I liked

The program was phenomenal. They had a wide variety of presenters who could speak to a wide variety of topics. This included scientific discussions, professional development training, and information regarding the TGen Institute itself. It was organized by individuals who truly cared about learning and it showed!

What I wish was different

Due to SARS-CoV-2, we were unable to attend the internship in person unfortunately. However, I greatly appreciated the fact that they transitioned the opportunity online rather than simply cancelling it. They still did an excellent job, just a less hands-on experience.

Advice

Highly recommend applying to this program. It is a fantastic organization and a great opportunity to gain field experience.

What I liked

I enjoyed the information that was given about different aspects of research. Also, the different speakers that were brought into the program to talk about what they do and how they got to where they are at in their careers. The effort and ability that went into planning an online internship was amazing. The out reach staff at TGen made an interesting and memorable experience during an uncertain time for students.

What I wish was different

We can't control the unknown, but I wish that it was an in-person internship. I would have liked hands on experience at the facility and to have learned new techniques in the lab.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try the unknown. After attending the online seminars, there were new questions that I had and new areas I never thought of exploring. The take home message that I got was that there may not be a field YET that I want to be in, but it may be there in the future.

Lab Technician

May 2020 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

The employees are all very nice and do everything they can to help each other in their research. The CLIA team treats each COVID-19 sample that comes through as a patient and top priority.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it has been a great first clinical lab experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. In my experience higher ups in the lab want to help you become successful and comfortable with lab techniques.

biology intern

January 2017 - April 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I really enjoyed making my very own poster for the first time. It is a very paced environment and within little time you learn so much.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time to run our experiments as there were many trials and errors.

Advice

I would say work hard and try to understand why you are doing the process instead of just memorizing.

What I liked

The hands-on work done at the direction of knowledgeable mentors facilitated personal growth.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship had begun earlier in the summer rather than later.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions - at first the environment can be intimidating but everyone wants to see you succeed and is willing to help.
