Textron Aviation

Process Engineer

May 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity that Textron allowed me to learn and demonstrate my electrical expertise. This position is hands on and each day is a different day. Textron also allowed me to tour and shadow different positions that I’ve had interest in.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been assigned to another PE to really understand a day and life within their shoes.

Advice

For most, this will be the first time being immersed in a large corporate job. Immerse yourself and absorb as much and I repeat AS MUCH as you can and show that you want to be there and prove to be a valuable asset. A company is not expecting you to come in with these skills ready to go but is looking for someone willing to learn.

Process engineering Intern

May 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I loved being able to work in a team environment and see what my future in a business would look like. This company is very team driven and I could always asked for help when I needed it. They were always willing to help me excel and learn new things about this industry. There were also a lot of opportunities to see different aspects of the company to be able to experience what you may want to do in your future career.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish that could've been different was being able to work more one on one with some of the interns. There was only one other intern on my team and we were both at different locations so it was hard for us to be able to collaborate our ideas together. Some other areas of the company had more opportunities to work with other interns.

Advice

Always do the fun things that the company provides you! You will meet so many new people and gain a lot of different connections.

Business Development Intern

May - August 2017 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

This internship program is among the largest in Wichita, they have a ton of fun mingling and networking opportunities across the organization and I met a ton of new people. They have cool experiences like discovery flights in Cessna 172's where they let you fly the plane, and tours of their factories. They also reimburse you for ground school for a private pilot license! They encourage repeat internships and allow priority applications before outside applicants are allowed. This was my second internship with the company and I loved that although my prior internship wasn't the role I was hoping for, I was given an offer for this internship in my top pick for positions.

What I wish was different

My first experience was absolutely fantastic and exciting to have an internship after only 1 year in college. My second experience under a different manager I felt that I was left in the dark about where I stood and there seemed to be miscommunications about my performance and their expectations. I had a great experience but the work that is provided can become monotonous and many other interns I interacted with said they ran out of work to do. Management teams have unrealistic expectations that we can come in for 3 months and make big changes and innovations, while our power is limited and coworkers seemed to look down on interns, setting our projects at a very low priority which limits the impact we can make under such strict deadlines. My work was more valued during my first position when I was treated like a new employee trainee, while I didn't feel I was empowered to be impactful during my second internship and moreso treated as a temporary employee, isolated and provided limited guidance and was treated that my questions were common knowledge even though I was only a sophomore and new to marketing roles.

Advice

Take every opportunity to interact with other departments. Ask LOTS of questions of your coworkers and managers and don't be afraid to be a nuisance to them because it's better than making an impression that you're unmotivated and timid. Shadow as many positions as possible and be involved with socializing with the interns in town for the summer because they're awesome people. Try to think outside the box and brainstorm your "extra credit" on your projects and go beyond what is written out for you to do, even if you're concerned they won't value it. If you don't know what to do, study their website, blogs, and the aviation industry as a whole, and go network with coworkers as much a possible.
