Texas Tech University

Procurement Services Intern

February 2021 • Lubbock, TX

What I liked

I like that I am able to get a feel of what a real office culture looks like. The day-to-day monotonous, yet valuable, experience that adults in their career face. I like that I am able to build connections while being here and I can observe real professionals so that I can better be one myself.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had taken the opportunity to go to the happy hour with the group every week, or that I showed up to the team lunches. My social anxiety and fear of not being good enough halted me from making some good friends.

Advice

While you are doing your internship, dig deep into yourself and try to be as self aware as you can. Meaning, use this experience to determine if you really want to be in the field you are exploring. Are you okay with the quiet and isolated lifestyle of working in a cubicle all day? Do you want to be more hands on or less hands on? Are you good at the work you have been taught, or do you find it difficult? Asking yourself these questions can help you make decisions on what companies to apply for, and for what positions. Additionally, while this needs to be unsaid, do remember to stay as professional as possible. There are many different platforms of communication used on a day to day basis, and all of them deserve a different style, or level, or professionalism. For example. my quick chat to a coworker on Microsoft Teams is much more casual than an email to another department with my manager CC'd to it.

Summer Conference Staff

May - August 2019 • Lubbock, TX

What I liked

Getting to meet and work with the other conference staff members was awesome. I got to meet a ton of people at Tech and made a lot of friends. The RLCs, GHCs, and summer interns were very friendly and supportive.

What I wish was different

Scheduling for desk shifts and dedications could feel uncoordinated and unfair at times. It was difficult to plan out a consistent schedule to pair with an outside part-time job.

Advice

Sign up for dedications early in the summer, it’s best to finish them early and not have to worry about it. At some point, something will probably pop up that you are unsure how to address. Make sure to ask questions if you’re not sure what to do—message the group chat, ask the SBA, or call COC.
