Texas de Brazil

Restaurant Server

October 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

It was a clean, fast-paced environment, where there was less worked involved than in some restaurant. You got to learn about wine, and liquor, and there is a chance for growth around the company. The pay was pretty good, and the customers were usually more understanding and well-mannered than other restaurants.

What I wish was different

My boss was a terrible people person, and I wish I hadn't been employed by him. There was obvious favoritism, as well bickering and yelling between servers consistently. The staff wasn't very supportive, and unlike most restaurants, there was almost no sense of community in the restaurant: servers were belligerent and seemed to have no sense of personal boundaries or basic respect and empathy for other co-workers. My co-workers seemed to have a complete lack of emotional intelligence, and we're helplessly rude. You have to work every holiday except Christmas, to a point where you cannot even make a request off. This was the most toxic workplace I've worked in.

Advice

This restaurant chain isn't necessarily awful, but this specific place was, so I would recommend working at Texas de Brazil, but not with my specific co-worker. If you have kids you want to spend time with, think twice before becoming a server here. Make sure if you feel belittled at your workplace, you take that as a sign, and be cautious. It is not normal.

What I liked

I liked the fast-paced and exciting aspect of the job as well as being able to interact with many different people every day.

What I wish was different

I felt the training system in particular should have been more organized and workplace rules more obvious--such as when or how to take breaks, etc.

Advice

Everyone should work in a restaurant at some point!
