I enjoyed seeing children who had no way of communicating learn to use either verbal mands or a picture exchange card system to communicate their needs.

Child Neurology Intern

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I was really able to connect with the child neurologists and the residents during clinic. I really like meeting new people, so getting to meet the patients with the doctor was a really valuable experience. I also gained a few technical skills, such as the ability to read MRIs as well as utilize basic medical diagnostic techniques.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to intern for longer. I learned a lot and saw many different kinds of patients, but I was unable to live near the hospital. Commuting from home took a long time, so I was not able to spend the whole day at the hospital. The actual experience was pretty amazing.

Advice

Doctors at large medical centers will most likely have many visiting residents or medical students. This means they are very used to inexperienced people coming in and asking questions, and they are very welcoming. Take advantage of these opportunities to see if the medical career path is really what you would like to do. This experience was able to help me make that decision easily.
