Texas Biomedical Research Institute

Volunteer Student Researcher

June - August 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed gaining experience and skills in the immunology research field, especially in the privatized research environment at Texas Biomed. In addition, I enjoyed the atmosphere present at the institute as they encouraged not only collaboration but also gave opportunities for personal development and presentation of in progress works to colleagues for the purpose of gaining critical feedback.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to spend more time in the lab as I did not have time to complete proper training to experience all of the work the group performed. Specifically, I would have enjoyed working with the murine model and learning the methods associated with caring for research animals as TBRI has a heavy focus on animal-based research.

Advice

The most beneficial experience with TBRI would either be within their internship program or through a long-term volunteer research position. Their connections with nearby universities make the institute a great place to network and build experience, but this would be best done over time when there is more opportunity to delve into projects in place as well as create individual projects.
