TerraCycle

Marketing Intern

June - August 2021 • Trenton, NJ

What I liked

My TerraCycle internship was super customizable in that they let me learn and dive into what I wanted to. I was very interested in copywriting, so they let me write blogs, e-mails, site pages, social, and scripts. I also got to work on a campaign throughout my entire experience, which was such a valuable experience. It's absolutely the reason that I was able to get my next internship.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship had been paid. For a company that preaches doing good, their interns should be paid. I especially realized this when I was leaving and a new full-time employee started getting assigned all the blogs I had been writing. They asked, "Why am I getting all these blog assignments?" The answer was that I was leaving and no other full-time employee wanted to do them.

Advice

A TerraCycle internship is what you make it. They'll give you assignments, but to get a lot of out it, you should go out of your way to take on more and to make more connections.

Public Relations Intern

May - August 2018 • Toronto, Ontario

What I liked

Learning about eco-capitalism, i.e. how to fuse sustainable values with profitable business. Also really enjoyed the marketing aspect of my job/running TerraCycle's social media and curating social media campaigns.

What I wish was different

Wish I could have gotten paid! I also would like to work outside of my home town.

Advice

Don't underestimate yourself because you're "just an intern". Approach your supervisor with ideas, (constructive) criticisms, etc. I found that my employers really valued my opinion (especially when it came to marketing and social media).

Public Relations Intern

May - August 2017 • Trenton, NJ

What I liked

It is an exciting company to work for with its engaging entrepreneurial spirit and its endless quest for innovation. People who work at TerraCycle are there because they believe in the cause and so you are surrounded by happy, driven people hoping to make the world a better place. You will feel your contributions are worthwhile even as an intern. Office dress is casual, and free lunch!

What I wish was different

The location of the Trenton office is not ideal, but there is plenty of parking and the building is secure.

Advice

Don't limit yourself to one department. Everyone is so welcoming that it is a great opportunity to learn about all the different aspects of the business. Engage with coworkers, always offer to help, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

PR intern

May - July 2017 • Trenton, NJ

What I liked

I liked the unique workplace environment and the company’s goal to help the environment. I learned a lot about recycling and what needs to be done. The company is very unique and growing fast!

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to meet more people within the company.

Advice

Learn as much as you can. The company and their mission is very interesting and they want you to ask questions. They also want to hear what the interns think.

Circular Economy Intern

June - August 2018 • Trenton, NJ

What I liked

The work culture! TerraCycle offers a fast moving and open learning environment, where all employees and interns are encouraged to grow. On my team specifically, my manager let me choose my projects based on my interest. I was able to explore several avenues within the group, not just his department, and was reassured that my personal and professional growth was the main goal for my internship experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a asked to learn more about the other business units within the company. While the company encourages open information and learning throughout, it is a very casual setting, and I felt I didn't know the best way to set up some time to chat with other groups that wouldn't be too formal. Additionally, I got the sense that interns typically didn't stray from their respective teams, so I decided to just piece things together over time.

Advice

Don't be afraid to move across the country! I moved from CA to NJ for this experience, and absolutely loved it. If you have the means, stepping outside your comfort zone and usual circle is worth it.
