Target

Beauty Consultant

June - August 2019 • Southington, CT

What I liked

-Working with beauty products and being able to give out free sampling -Receiving monthly gratis to try out new products -Employee discount (10%) -Pay was more than minimum wage ($13/hr)

What I wish was different

-I wish the employee discount was more than 10% off. It also should be used with any type of payment method (ie. you can only use cash, Target Redcard, Checks with the discount. No debit/credit cards) -They give you 18 days to request time off. If you do it later (like a regular two weeks), it won't be eligible -I wish you could access you Target portal at home to request time off, not have to wait to do it in store -The 90 day "trial period" for new employees makes it hard for college students who may want to continue working at another location near their university, or for when they want to return in the future. Instead of transferring, you have to quit your job, then re-apply, then quit again, etc.

Advice

If you want to work at Target for the summer, make sure to apply as early as possible so you can try to get all 90 days in. hat way, you can transfer to another store instead of quitting at the one you have and then having to re-apply.

What I liked

Flexible scheduling so that I could focus on school.

What I wish was different

More training before starting.

Advice

They're more picky with new hires at the beginning of the year. The best time to apply is at the beginning and end of the summer. That way you have the job down by the time holiday season comes around.

Administrative Services Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Nashville, TN

What I liked

I had a lot of responsibility, I ran a whole store of 60 employees for the last week of my internship. Making sure the backroom, front end, and guests were all satisfied.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gone to other stores to see what their environment is like, team members, customers, processes.

Advice

Never give up on yourself, you can do so much more than you think you just need some confidence. I was 20 years old and leading an entire Target store with 60 employees and hundreds of thousands of dollars that came into our store.

Sales Associate

July - October 2019 • Land O' Lakes, FL

What I liked

Flexible schedule, short commute, the ability to interact with guests while building and organizing floor plans.

What I wish was different

More understanding and personable leadership with respect for the employees' time and the desire to build a meaningful relationship with their associates rather. Also, associates were not seen as equals to each other and there seems to be a hierarchy based on who was there longer or the favorite to the leaders. Very unprofessional dynamic.

Advice

Target is a great place to work as they have good wages and many hours to hand out. Not a great place for a professional experience.

executive intern

June - August 2019 • Concord, NH

What I liked

During my time at Target so far, I have experienced a highlight moment within Specialty Sales. By being in this area, I have realized its importance to store flow and how it is transferable to other jobs and career paths. I feel that I have learned the most in this area because I had an amazing trainer. Wendy made sure to allow me to see different aspects of her job, the fun and the not so fun like computer work. However, allowing me to see everything enabled me to understand why she does what she does. Wendy was also very repetitive in her routines, which enabled me to understand the flow and mental path the she follows on a day to day basis. She has been the best trainer so far because she knows I want to learn as much as possible and does not have me do the same thing over and over because she knows it will not enhance my knowledge. Therefore, I feel that I learned the most in this area and am confident in leading a team using the skills that Wendy taught me. Those skills include organization, communication, accountability, and structure.

What I wish was different

During my time in Specialty Sales, I can say that I wish I got to spend more time leading the smaller areas like beauty and electronics. Although I do lack the information necessary to sell these products, I feel that leading it may be different. I could have improved on my communication with team members and increased my ability to be a leader in different or uncomfortable situations, which is important and is definitely a transferable skill.

Advice

I would definitely recommend this internship to another student. I think it offers a student a lot of experience in retail in short amount of time. You’ll learn about Target, how retail stores work (bigger ones, corporate level), how to operate a business keeping track of hours and payroll, how each area is run by the Executive Team Lead, and so much more. I think rotational is perfect for those that aren’t sure exactly what they want to do yet. Plus, you have the opportunity of full hire at the end if you work hard.

Executive Stores Intern

May - August 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I liked that the internship was something new every day-- you go through a 10 week rotational program shadowing leaders in every department in the store. However, there was a lack of support from leadership to grow as an individual and develop as a leader within the company.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more encouragement and effort from leaders to develop you as a future leader within the company.

Advice

Ask tons of questions, especially from team members. They know the store the most!
