Talbots

Client specialist

May 2021 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

I like interacting with clients and helping people find clothes that make them feel good. My coworkers and supervisors are great at lifting me up and appreciating what I do for the store. Their kindness is a big reason why I enjoy working there so much. Additionally, they are flexible with my schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish I was paid more, my wages do not reflect the amount of work I do at Talbots. This is reflective of the corporate culture that is out of touch with their individual store locations. Minimum wage in Florida for hourly workers is not a livable wage with the current inflation and costs of city living. I work on operations and front of house, I teach my coworkers about register functions and complete direct orders, and I am generally just running around always. I am someone who likes to always be busy, and there is always something for me to be doing, however, it is exhausting and my wages do not reflect the my labor.

Advice

If you are someone who does not like to interact with strangers and are not very social, a retail job is not for you. Finding clients who want to buy from you and return to your store is all about the connections you create. Patience, tolerance, and good listening skills are all important for the job. Being cheerful and friendly is a cornerstone of the Talbots brand. They care about the customer experience and that is something unique amongst retail brands.

Public Relations Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Gained insight into the world of public relations and the overall behind the scenes of a fashion company. Worked with other interns on a summer long project to create a new product line that the company would offer. Had weekly "talks" with executives to learn about their career paths and overall advice in the workforce. The overall internship exposed me to multiple departments in the company and showed me I enjoyed doing public relations!

Advice

Stay in contact with those you meet during your internship. You never know who you might run into in the future and networking is very important!

What I liked

I enjoyed working with customers! It was a pretty easy job as long as you're friendly and know how to work a cash register.

Honestly it was pretty much the perfect summer job for me.

Advice
