Population Health Intern

July - September 2019 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed working both independently and in teams. I was able to learn so much from those around me and preceptors. I also enjoyed getting to see the outcome of my work and the impact that I had in my short amount of time.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given a larger variety of projects. Over 10 weeks I have 4-5 projects, some that were very similar to each other, but I thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Advice

Network network network! Always ask questions and seek advice for ways to improve yourself. Some projects were large and others were small and it always important to time manage you might think that there are many hours in the day bjugut in reality, the 10 weeks fly by!

Cardiac Rehab Intern

October - December 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

I really liked being able to interact with the patients in the department. They had a lot of stories to share and it was amazing to get to know them on a personal level. I enjoyed interacting with the staff who taught us how to take a patient's blood pressure and also guiding patient's through their stretches before they did their exercises. I thought it was super fun that the department looks like a mini gym for the patients.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to learn more from the staff members because they have a wide range of knowledge in kinesiology and I would've enjoyed learning more from them. They were always attending to the patients which kept them busy, but I learned a lot by watching them.

Advice

I would advise people to be friendly and outgoing in order to take full advantage of this experience. You really have the opportunity to learn from a lot of patients with very unique stories and they motivate you to continue to reach your goals. Also, be professional and make sure to arrive on time for your shift. Even if the department staff is flexible with your scheduling, make sure to be respectful and get there on time.
