Undergraduate Research Assistant

June 2019 • Houghton, NY

What I liked

I liked the independent nature and the work flow. It allowed me to apply my knowledge in physics to complex tasks without me feeling left behind as my advisor was always there to help.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more people on campus. There was only my advisor and 3 other students for most of the summer.

Advice

If you are a physics major, try to do this at least once, it's the closest research experience you'll get to graduate research.

Learning and Development Intern

June - August 2019 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I loved being in a professional setting and being able to be creative. I brought a fresh perspective to the office so I enjoyed working there everyday. I also got really good leadership experience that helped shape me for my future endeavors.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve stayed on longer!

Advice

If you don’t ask, you’ll never know! If I was afraid to ask for certain opportunities then I would’ve never been able to grow. So by asking for the space to take the lead on some things I challenged not only myself but proved my worth in the office!

Research Assistant

June 2018 • Buffalo, NY

What I liked

This program, though listed as a Research Assistant, was actually as a teaching assistant. The flexibility of my experience was extremely helpful. I was provided with a vast number of resources, both in terms of mentorship and in terms of materials needed for the courses.

What I wish was different

Very little, the program is run and organized with as much efficiency as can be expected. Perhaps a more thorough knowledge of the curriculum beforehand.

Advice

Apply only if you are interested in working within the field of education at some level. Knowledge of course content is of course essential, but so is having the temperament.
