Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Houghton, NY

What I liked

I participated in hands on research where we attempted to measure the likelihood of low energy, light ion nuclear reactions occurring by using inertial confinement fusion. I worked closely with my professor and two other students, I learned a lot of practical laboratory skills, and I made several connections because of doing summer research.

What I wish was different

Our research was ten weeks long, which was good, however, it didn't feel long enough given the amount that we were trying to get done. We were busy, and as another side note to anyone considering summer research, there aren't that many people at Houghton over the summer, so if you are a social creature, bear that in mind.

Advice

Research is much easier when you admit to your professor that you don't know what you're doing. So ask for help, and write down whatever you do in the logbook.
