get rid of the "if the next person doesn't show up you have to stay" rule.
Advice
the management changed after I left and I have heard nothing but bad comments about her, so just be mindful of that.

Relax. Don't let the stress get to you. It can be a lot sometimes, but at the end of the day, as long as the store is still standing, you always have tomorrow to do better.

The manager was really good at rearranging the schedule whenever an emergency came up for anyone.

It would be more convenient if they had a direct deposit set up when getting paid.
Advice
Be willing to not only work at a fast pace during peak hours, but also prioritize what must be done first; especially if you are closing for the evening.
