I LOVED this internship. After the training, it was very simple and had a routine. Working with all of the writers and illustrators that I did, the work was seamless. We also had a great communication system with each other, and most of my coworkers were really responsive.
What I wish was different
Advice
Have a routine! This is not a fast-paced opportunity by any means, but make sure you meet the deadlines so you don't get left behind!

Not much - this was a really great internship opportunity.
Advice
Only take this internship, whether it is writing or editing, if you are serious about journalism. It is not an overwhelming amount of work, but publication is fast paced.

Not much. It was kind of stressful coming up with pitches and writing and researching for a new piece each week, but I think in the end, it helped me develop as a writer tremendously.
Advice
Have some pitches prepared before you start the program. There are going to be times where you have no ideas, so just have a few concepts to turn to when that happens.
DO NOT procrastinate. Weeks fly by and you don't want to end up writing your piece the night before. Doesn't help at all.

What I liked
Our editor Kris was really cool, and he gave us great feedback on our writing. We writers also got to get feedback from editors and our group members in weekly workshops which was really helpful, and also sort of fun—everyone was really nice! I definitely got more comfortable with writing weekly content and I know my long form article-writing skills improved.
What I wish was different
I wish this was a paid internship. But if you need content-writing experience, this is a great first step.
Advice
If in doubt, just do it! This is a great beginner’s internship. There’s no interview required so polish your resume and/or cover letter, if you send one! Work on your stories throughout the week, and make a big list the article ideas so you don’t run out of things to write about.

The schedule was very flexible and the peer workshops are helpful and constructive. The experience really helps you become a better writer. I loved my time working with the editor-in-chief and fellow students.
What I wish was different
I do wish we could've had more chance to practice our skills before we started publishing our articles.
Advice
Write about things you are passionate about or inspired by, otherwise you might feel more stumped in the writing process. Do not procrastinate your writing because then you might not have enough time to revise. Don't be afraid to give honest feedback to your peers.

This internship is very self disciplined and can be time consuming if you have full time classes. That being said it’s good if you just want to practice illustrating/certain techniques and have finished pieces to add to a portfolio.
