Strawbery Banke Museum

Historical Interpreter

May 2017 • Portsmouth, NH

What I liked

I’ve worked here in the summer and December for three years now, and it’s definitely taught me a lot about how to engage a listener.

What I wish was different

I wish my schedule was more consistent. I also wish it paid more, but that’s 2.00 above minimum wage where they are, and they are a non-profit.

Advice

It’s an awesome place to work, great atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. They trust their employees a lot. I’ve never intern there, but I believe they have pretty robust opportunities for internships in archeology, educational programming, and curation.

What I liked

My supervisor was amazing! She was really patient as I learned a lot of my roles while on the job! Portsmouth, NH, was also a wonderful town to live in for a summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had come into the job with more firm ideas of what I wanted to do while I was there.

Advice

Be independent and self-motivated in your work, because there’s a good chance that you will be working alone most days.
