Deli Clerk
June 2021 • Pennington, NJ
What I liked
The deli manager was nice, and the work was pretty chill in general.
What I wish was different
The hiring manager rushed me through the hiring process, so I didn't get parts of the training that I was supposed to get, like a tour of the store.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions about things you don't understand or don't yet know. Also, don't let the annoying customers ruin the nice ones for you.

I liked my staff, cool kids and very diverse in race and ages
What I wish was different
The wages, I had heard that they had removed our hazard pay of $1 a month prior to my beginning, which would have allowed me to be paid $11.80 per hour instead of my $10.80
Advice
Keep a cool head, some customers just want to fight to say they "won" and feel like their cashiers are below them.

Customer Service Department Head
January 2018 • Piscataway, NJ
What I liked
I have been working at Stop & Shop for well over two years and I can say definitively that there is a strong employee-customer relationship. Overall, customers and employees value each other greatly and it manifests itself in efficient lines, flowing conversations, and a clean store. This store is a well-oiled machine with knowledgeable cashiers, top-notch customer service, and loyal customers.
What I wish was different
Stop & Shop might be a bit "behind the eight ball" on its back-end technology, particularly the Kronos and ACE CC register tracking system. There is no continuously available inventory for employees to easily check.
Advice
Invest in your customers by being respectful, providing competitive prices, and following through on concerns and complaints. Working at the store has been a lesson in people skills and retail business strategy.

What I liked
My other co-workers were all much older than me, but luckily they were kind and patient and willing to help me learn the ropes of the job. In my opinion, the job would have been much more boring and tedious if they were not around to help.

overnight grocery store clerk
January - September 2019 • Pennington, NJ
What I liked
At first I liked the hours and flexibility of having time during the day but that quickly became a restriction when I noticed I wasn't getting enough sleep. The regular income was nice, even though it never felt like enough.
What I wish was different
I wish the company had worked with me more on my schedualing once school started. They were unflexibile with regards to letting me change my availability to accomodate my class schedule and that was the tie that I decidede to go all in with applying to RU. I was originally planning on working and not trying to take any loans.
Advice
Keep a part time job where you may work about 10 to 15 hours a week to have a small income to be able to rely on but also and more importantly, manage your loans and grants as efficiently as possible. I paid off my car insurance, rent and one credit card saving about 800 dollars for food and gas throughout the semester. (I'm not good at saving...thankfully I have that job). But not having to worry about the majority of my bills through the semester allows me to completely focus on my work. Don't underestimate over planning. Being too prepared is way better than being unprepared.
