What I liked

I loved getting the opportunity to work with my professors and conduct cutting edge physics research in such an interesting field as quantum photonics.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been on campus and spend more time in the lab and actually meeting with my professor.

Advice

Always try new things. I did not know if I would like the field of research (quantum photonics) or if I was even qualified. It was very interesting, I learned a lot, and I love quantum photonics! As an undergraduate, and even in life, there is always more to learn so do not be afraid that you do not know enough. Just be open minded and ready to learn.

What I liked

The collaborative environment between employees. The school-sponsored activities such as the dinner cruise and the Yankees game. The simple nature of taking attendance and ensuring that everyone is doing ok in class.

What I wish was different

Some of the activities were a little cheap.

Advice

Always remember to communicate with your co-workers to ensure that all students are accounted for.

Student Researcher

June - August 2021 • Hoboken, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed the hands on experience and an opportunity to work on a project!

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve had the experience in person, but that was a necessary precaution due to COVID-19.

Advice

Have an open mind! My research was process-based modeling which is someone I’d never considered pursuing, I just liked the Professor. Now, I have a new opportunity in the same field because of that experience I gained over the summer.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

July 2020 • Hoboken, NJ

What I liked

I loved being able to get hands-on experience doing work in a lab setting. I have also enjoyed being able to work part-time with a flexible schedule during the fall semester.

What I wish was different

I can't think of much that I dislike about the experience, I really enjoy doing research work but it can be frustrating when experiments don't work out the way you expect and hope they will.

Advice

I would encourage more undergraduates to ask their professors about the research that they do. A lot of interesting work goes on outside the classroom that I never would have known about until I asked some professors in my program.

Embedded Systems Software Developer

May 2020 • Castle Point, NJ

What I liked

I liked getting practical work experience for the first time. I got to work remotely with a professor and PhD student who were very accommodating and willing to listen to my input. I also enjoyed meeting with the rest of the lab every week to discuss my progress and hear how things were going for other students on their tangential projects. Plus it was great to know that my work was going to a good cause in assisting and preventing physical therapy.

What I wish was different

Every step of the way, administration hinted that things would not go well for us come competition time if we didn't spend most if not all of our free time continuing to work for free. Additionally, we were told we were not allowed to seek additional employment or we would be disqualified from the program. The requirements kept increasing throughout the summer, and the final competition with a cash prize had been cancelled with no communication.

Advice

Though the world is in hard times, it is still important to have an open communication channel with your team. That's how you get your work done and feel accomplished in the process.

Biology Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Hoboken, NJ

What I liked

I participated in a summer program at Stevens called Internship & Entrepreneurship Summer Scholars Program. The goal of the program was for non-pinnacle scholars to have an opportunity to conduct research and give them an opportunity to market their research. I really liked how we were motivated to present our research with the main goal of introducing it to the real world and being able to attract audience despite their background of knowledge and learn essential communication skills.

What I wish was different

Since majority of my peer scholars were aiming to patent their product, the majority of time we would focus was on patenting, whereas my project was research and information based so I was not really sure how I would go about marketing as it was barely discussed.

Advice

I really wish that the non-pinnacle scholars to take advantage of this program and it will not only give them an advantage to conduct research but also learn real-life skills when facing audience from all different fields.
