Steve & Kate's Camp

Launchpad Lead

May 2018 • Montclair, NJ

What I liked

I love working at S&K’s camp! At our Montclair location, we’re practically family. Our staff is a mixture of people who’ve worked for the camp for several years and people who just started in summer of 2019; nonetheless, we all work together as a team and know how to enjoy the job while staying on task. We all feel comfortable communicating with our director, Andrew, who is always a huge presence at camp. I’ve been working minimum wage jobs for almost 8 years and working at Steve & Kate’s is the best summer job I’ve had.

What I wish was different

I wish we were able to communicate directly with our HQ in California to discuss new strategies and ideas for camp.

Advice

If you can handle the pressure of being around 250+ kids, 8 hours a day and five days a week, apply to work at our camp. Don’t take things too seriously and be open to learning from kids.

Bring water! There's usually plenty available, but working outdoors in the summer makes it a good idea to always have a full bottle handy.

Lead Position of Coding & Robotics Studio

June - September 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved the experience of being able to pass on some of my experience, from college, down to the kids and have a chance to spark their curiosity to explore more on their own once camp was over. The experience of teaching the kids was rewarding and it also gave me a chance to learn how to navigate the occasional chaos to make sure my areas of supervision were moving as smoothly as possible.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a few more staff members because, in studios, I was watching over a lot of kids and so at times when there were rushes of campers, I wasn't always able to really give every camper as much attentive help as I would've liked because there were so many of them needing help all at the same time.

Advice

I would say recruit the campers to help. In the coding studio, there were always a few kids who excelled at the activities and eventually they started helping me run the studio. The kids love helping each other out and once you have a system in place where you let them take some leadership among their peers, things ran very smoothly. This system was great because I knew the abilities of each of the kids and so, at that point, I was confident that just about every camper that came in there was getting helped because besides me I had atleast other campers, at a time, available to answer questions and to get kids started on the activites.
