Business Intelligence Intern

June - August 2018 • Owings Mills, MD

What I liked

Amazing experience in an very interesting industry. Great technical experience with database management, data analysis, data visualization, and project management. Small, close knit company with very friendly and intelligent employees. BI team is a great group; ready to answer questions and keep interns involved. Amazing free lunch everyday day provided by the company chef. You work a lot of hours so there is opportunity for quite a bit of overtime as well as free dinner.

What I wish was different

Possibly more clarification on opportunities after the internship. Recived almost all positive feedback throughout the entire internship and left without any conversation about if there was even a possibility about getting an offer back. If my work was not up to the standard of the company, which is possible, it was not relayed. Perhaps more opportunities with superiors to sit down and discuss constructive cristsicm on work throughout the summer.

Advice

At such a small company, there is a lot of brunt work that is handed to the interns. While you will have many interesting projects doing ETLs, SQL, sales force, and data visualization, expect that most of your time will be dedicated to data collection and cleansing in Excel. It is a lot of hours of doing redundant and simple tasks in excel. However, overrall you become detail oriented, and a master of excel along with all the other data techinal experience. Would recommend to anyone looking for a career in data.
