State Farm

technology intern

May - August 2020 • Bloomington, IL

What I liked

How open, accepting, and flexible they were. They really made it as good an experience as they could, and they were open to allowing you to switch departments if necessary.

What I wish was different

It was online due to COVID-19, but it was unprepared as it was a last second decision not to cancel the program. Once again, they tried as hard as they could, but the infrastructure was not completely there or prepared yet.

Advice

Come in with an open mind, and believe in yourself. The people there are willing to help you.

Sales intern

September - November 2020 • Galesburg, IL

What I liked

Even though I wasn’t licensed, the agency I worked with was willing to teach me the ins and outs of policies, so I could better understand what we were selling to people. They allowed me to involve my own strategies and ideas to reach out to customers even though it wasn’t the way they typically did things.

What I wish was different

I would take the time to get licensed before working there, so I could get more hands on experience quoting and targeting new customers. Without a license, the amount of work I could do was limited.

Advice

Talk to everyone at the agency, and ask them how they operate from a day to day. Every person in sales operates slightly different, but they all have similarities. Gathering all of this info will help inform you how you will want to operate if you work in this industry since you are given a significant amount of freedom.

Sales Representative

July - September 2020 • Franklin, TN

What I liked

My team, the management, the environment, and the resources provided to help learn sales.

What I wish was different

The job itself was pretty boring, as selling insurance can be difficult. The prospecting aspect of selling insurance gets repetitive and monotonous, as well.

Advice

It is a good place to learn sales, but don't commit to working in insurance full time unless you really know you want to.

Claims Intern

May - July 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I loved the group of interns that I had the pleasure of working with.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, we were forced to work from home. This made it harder to forge meaningful relationships with my fellow interns, supervisors, and mentors.

Advice

Apply for internships as early and often as you can. You never know who might offer you a position.
