State Compensation Insurance Fund

Student Assistant

June 2018 • Rohnert Park, CA

What I liked

Flexible hours, great coworkers

What I wish was different

More variety in the work

Advice

I was hesitant to apply due to it being a legal office and I felt under-qualified having never worked an office job before, but it was a great way to get used to the environment and get to learn about an office setting and how the industry works, so if you see an opportunity go for it!

Student Aid

May 2019 • Rohnert Park, CA

What I liked

After my position as an intern was over, they offered me to stay on as their continued Student Aid. Everyone who works there is so kind and willing to teach you everything you need to know. You learn so much. It’s a great resume builder. I plan on being an adjuster after graduating.

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing, this was an amazing experience.

Advice

State Compensation Insurance Fund is an amazing step towards a potential career. Working hard and being a self starter is key to being successful here.

Administrative Law Intern

June - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I loved working for State Fund this summer! They treated me with so much respect, and each week I spent time in court talking with the different lawyers and judges. My work was split between administrative duties to help lawyers with secretarial work, and conducting research projects to help with our open cases based on the current Workers' Compensation laws.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have spent all of my time on the research and shadowing aspect of the job, but understood going into it that about 1/3 - 1/2 of my duties would include different ways of helping out around the office.

Advice

This was a great way to be introduced to the possibility of a career in law, especially because of the slower pace of administrative law and the way in which I could see the lawyers so happy with their jobs and also able to have families and free time to have lives outside of work. I would recommend taking as much time as you can doing case reviews and research, and spending a lot of time shadowing and helping lawyers in court.

Project services intern

June - September 2019 • Vacaville, CA

What I liked

What I wish was different

Internship depends on what department your assigned to or whoever your supervisor was. I had many days where I was super busy with projects but then I had days where I did nothing because I finished my work.
