What I liked

Close environment with a lot of autonomy in designing and implementing Software solutions.

What I wish was different

More mentorship and guidance from senior software engineers to facilitate the onboarding and troubleshooting process.

Advice

Familiarize yourself with the development environment well before taking off into any large-scale projects.

Frontend Software Engineer

What I liked

– StartupTree is located in Cornell eHub, which is on campus. I had always wanted to stay in Ithaca over the summer so being able to do so while also getting good internship experience was great! – Lots of other interns that were all Cornell students so I made a bunch of new friends. – I was given my own team project and a lot of responsibility. Not just fixing bugs! – Our code got pushed live pretty frequently, so it was cool to see the real impact of our work. – Company bonding; we had fun BBQs! The CEO Peter Cortle is a great guy.

What I wish was different

– Greater diversity of team – More talking and collaboration in the office space – Less frequent morning standups with the entire team; it often wasn't necessary/people didn't pay attention

Advice

Everyone is really nice and open, so don't be afraid to speak up and/or take action! I wish I took the initiative to hang out with the other interns and connect with the older employees earlier in the summer.

Mobile Developer

June - August 2018 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

I really liked the entire experience. The company was a startup and the people I worked with were positive, driven, and caring. The engineering team formed a close bond. The work was great as well. It was something I have not done in the past, and learning something new is always fun and challenging. We ended up driving the product to beta testing.

What I wish was different

I think we should have planned to launch for beta testing a little earlier and aim to launch onto the app store before the internship is over.

Advice

Take learning seriously. I spent good amount of time taking tutorials and I was often feeling a little out of place to be learning something new when I feel like I should be making something.
