Research Assistant

June - August 2022 • Stanford, CA

What I liked

I learned so many new lab techniques, learned how to better think like a scientist, and built my confidence working in a lab!

What I wish was different

I wish some of my experiments had been more successful, but that's just the nature of biological research.

Advice

Don't be put off when your experiments don't give you the results you want! It's all part of the process of scientific discovery, keep going!

Student Researcher

June - August 2021 • Stanford, CA

What I liked

It was well-organized, the student mentors were phenomenal, and I had an amazing time working on difficult, unsolved problems that were nonetheless within the grasp of my existing mathematics knowledge. I also enjoyed chatting with the other SURIM members!

What I wish was different

I wish it would have been longer, since there were some details in my group's project which I was unhappy with by the end. It would have been nice to be able to smooth out the lumps in the project, as well as complete some of the ideas we had but didn't have time to flesh out.

Advice

If you are working on a group research project, spend at least three or four hours every day with your group with a whiteboard just going over ideas. The active, collaborative research was far more productive than anything that I could have accomplished individually. But also spend time on your own letting the problem and the ideas simmer. Most of my personal insight came during these periods of introspection.
