Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies, known as Stanford Seed

School Curriculum Developer

June - August 2019 • Accra, Greater Accra Region

What I liked

This opportunity gave me a lot of agency to come up with my own ideas and test them out at the school. Working closely with teachers and students to plan and create accessible, engaging, and most importantly, fun curriculum was both rewarding and impactful at my time at Stanford. I now have lifelong friends in Accra and cannot wait to go back and explore more of West Africa in general.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a larger stipend to account for living costs. The cost of living in Accra is much higher than what Stanford would determine "living" in Africa. Especially since my workplace was 45min-1hr commute every day and ubering everywhere was not only expensive, it was also unsafe.

Advice

Definitely an opportunity that is unique to Stanford in which you get to do an internship with a company (or in my case, a school) and utilize design thinking. Try new things and think outside the box! Creative ideas go a long way in companies and places that are open to your ideas.
