Stanford Health Care

medical research intern

May - August 2019 • Stanford, CA

What I liked

It was an amazing experience, because I was actually able to apply what I have learned in my biology, chemistry, and math courses at USF. I was also able to perform surgery on mice being used in one of the experiments, and normally that is not something you are able to do during undergrad.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to interact with patients instead of only being in the lab.

Advice

I would say never be afraid to go after any opportunity. I was intimidated to even apply for the position. I didn't think I was smart enough or qualified enough to picked. I was scared my first day because Stanford has such an amazing reputation, but I am glad I applied even though I was intimidated and nervous because it ended up being one of the best summers of my life.

Cancer Researcher

June 2019 • Stanford, CA

What I liked

I was able to learn many valuable skills in a short amount of time. The experience was very hands-on and I felt that I got a good idea of what a career in academic research would be like.

What I wish was different

I wish that the days in research weren't so routine. Many times, you end up doing the same things on the daily. Research is a slow and time consuming process and the work definitely reflects that.

Advice

A research summer is very valuable to any person. It teaches you valuable skills in communication, presentation, and synthesis. It also gives you the chance to explore whether academia is the right field for you.
