St. Vincent de Paul thrift store and warehouse brings joy and hope to destitute and needy people. Everyone in the building is met by the floor manager and greeted by name. All prices are discounted from retail for a bargain because the mission is to help the needy.
What I wish was different
I wish a very small portion of some of the volunteers actually took their opportunity and job experience seriously. I found myself over-worked and cleaning up messes and mistakes left by other people who worked for a short amount of time then took enormous breaks while I had a three-minute lunch and then back to work with very few breaks to prevent myself from blacking out from exhaustion while I attended Creighton University full-time, research full-time and volunteering part-time, all the while my kids running me ragged.
Advice
Absolutely make friends and long-standing acquaintances by showing you care and making a positive effort every day. There is nothing more satisfying than looking back at your work and seeing all of the smiling customers, co-workers, and showing respect and compassion for all. regardless of socioeconomic standing.
