St. Norbert College

Poss-Wroble Research Fellow

June - September 2020 • De Pere, WI

What I liked

Doing independent research under a math professor was really great! We looked at a new measure of partisan bias and used both theoretical mathematics (for proof of concept) and applied mathematics (for real-world data collection and calculations). It was interesting and rewarding to apply multiple aspects of my degree.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, all of our research was done from home, which made it difficult to coordinate and ask questions at times. In addition, we encountered difficulties with the Department of State, in that they removed some of the voting data we needed mid-research and did not respond to any of our attempts to contact them. If I were to attempt this type of research again, I would immediately make backups of all the information we might need.

Advice

I highly recommend working directly under a professor; not only does it provide valuable experience in your chosen field, but it also facilitates a closer relationship with that professor. I would say time management was one of the biggest challenges of working from home, so it's always best to create small goals and a realistic timeline!

What I liked

Working on campus was a really great way to get to know the year-round faculty and staff members, which was really fun!

What I wish was different

I don't think I would change anything, it was all really great!

Advice

Take the lesson of spending time getting to know staff and faculty members. While there weren't many students on campus during the summer, it still allowed me to talk to people I had never met before, and I still talk to them now!

What I liked

I enjoy the opportunity to learn about the environment since my studies focus on the medical aspect of biology. I am able to select my hours of work, spend my summers outside, define my unique project, and present my work.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to have more co-lab mates during the sampling season as sampling requires two people minimum. It was a struggle at times finding willing participants to help and to match our schedules.
