The Nutrition Center promotes community health through organizing, advocacy, and education. Located in the heart of downtown Lewiston, the Nutrition Center serves as a healthy food hub in the midst of the City’s most diverse and economically challenged neighborhoods.
Based on the belief that good health relies upon access to healthy food, the Nutrition Center (NC) utilizes a multi-pronged public health approach: building individual capacity for people to grow, choose and cook nutritious foods; and building community capacity to support a strong regional food system through programmatic , environmental and policy strategies.
The NC’s core programs include hands-on cooking and nutrition education for all ages; community gardens for families of low-income; garden education programs for children; FoodCorps programs in public schools; intensive job training programs for teens; three summer and winter farmers’ markets; emergency food distribution; and collaborative, community based assessment and planning activities.
