ER Nurse

June - August 2018 • Sioux City, IA

What I liked

I liked how I could be a nurse and work through the summer on the job that I want to go into when I graduate. I loved the people I worked with and the experiences I saw while working.

What I wish was different

Nothing. This is a great experience for student nurses between there junior and senior year. I learned so much over the summer and would highly recommend this to anyone.

Advice

To take it. I advise anyone, nursing major or not, to do some kind of internship over the summer because that is the hands-on experience. I felt that I learned more this summer than I have during school because school clinical is limited on experiences. So take those opportunities if you can!

Operations Intern

June - August 2018 • Singapore, North Region

What I liked

All of the staff were super friendly and welcoming. The staff went out of their way to not only teach us about the workload but also incorporated us into their own social spaces. I was able to actually play the ukulele with the nurses which was very fun. In addition, I learned to really enjoy interacting with the elderly patients. Teaching the patients how to do arts and crafts was the most fulfilling experience throughout my internship. It felt like I was making a difference in their stay at the hospital. They became much more lively and happier as we continued our program.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship was more structured. It was the first time that my supervisor had interns specifically for arts and health. He didn't know exactly what we should do and so my coworker and I were very confused at the beginning since there was a lack of direction. Additionally, my supervisor was not present all the time. Our offices were two floors apart which made meeting up and communication a bit difficult. We could have communicated easier if we were located in the same office space.

Advice

Learn to appreciate the people in your workspace because they will be the ones to keep you going during your internship. Relationships are so important to motivate you to keep working a tedious or stressful job.
