St. Lawrence University

Summer Admissions Intern

July - August 2021 • Canton, NY

What I liked

I liked how we had the freedom to decide on what projects we wanted to work on for the day and how we wanted to distribute our time.

What I wish was different

The last week of my internship clashed with orientation and classes for the next semester so it was very stressful for me to try to do both at the same time.

Advice

Be organized and start working on your projects early on.

Career Excellence Intern

August 2021 • Canton, NY

What I liked

The aspect of learning career significant materials, processes, and opportunities while then offering this information to aid the entirety of the campus body in their path to career excellence is priceless. I love the flexibility of the internship, but also the impact of our outreach we endure on the students on campus. This is a great internship to improve my own career excellence while helping my peer in career excellence.

What I wish was different

I love this internship. There is nothing really that should be changed, but I wish we could have more of the student body to use this resource so there could also be more interns.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that you should not be scared to think outside the box, good things can come from it.

SLU Fellowship Researcher

May - July 2020 • Canton, NY

What I liked

I loved the flexibility, because I got to plan my own schedule. The self-learning process was also enjoyable, and it was in fact a crucial part in my research. And this experience gave me an opportunity to apply what I learned in the classroom on real-world problems.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, the research was conducted remotely - I could only meet with my mentor online.

Advice

Time management is essential! You really need to be motivated in order to stay on schedule.

What I liked

I loved the hands-on experience that St. Lawrence offers with their fellowships.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19, the research had to be conducted virtually.

Advice

If you're interested in a specific subject, reach out to your professors! They are more than willing to give you advice on what you should do, and sometimes they will have ongoing research that you can assist on.

Admissions Intern

June - August 2020 • Canton, NY

What I liked

I loved the environment of the internship. Even though it was online, I found that I was able to create bonds with my fellow interns while also learning and helping with the admissions process.

What I wish was different

I think the only real thing that I wish had been different was the online aspect. It was obviously the only option due to the state of the world right now, but I definitely feel like I missed out on the on-campus internship experience.

Advice

I would say, don't go into it thinking that you're not prepared or ready. In the moment, you learn to adapt to situations and in turn you learn all the more. It's your experience, enjoy it!

Playwright

June - July 2018 • Canton, NY

What I liked

I had a free time to dedicate myself to write a three-act play about the experiences and challenges people of the LGBT community face because many people are usually aware of the surface level struggle, but I wanted people to be aware of the experiences aren't talked about as much.

What I wish was different

The number of scenes in each act is very off-balance, and I wished I could have planned a way in advance to find good placements or rearrange my scenes to end each act with a good breaking point moment.

Advice

I would say find a way to stay on top of things because being on campus for about 7 weeks with no classes is great, and it's very tempting to just relax and do nothing. It's very important to plan things accordingly because there are going to be regrets where you're should be working on your project, but you're not and now you have to rush to get it done on time. Planning doesn't have to be a day by day thing. It could be a weekly schedule, which is something that works best for me.

Canaras Staff Worker

June - August 2018 • Saranac Lake, NY

What I liked

I loved the job atmosphere. I loved that I could work outside for a good portion of the day. It was also fun being able to work with children everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had Saturday night off as well as our full day off.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would like to share about working at Canaras is that you need to make sure to take time for yourself. It is hard and exhausting work and you can easily tire yourself out.
