Research Assistant
August 2019 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
This job is and has been incredibly structured and organized. I have a specific place and purpose within the office, so there is no uncertainty as to what I will be doing. As an "employee" of St. Jude, most of my colleagues don't see me as an undergraduate student, but rather just another individual in the office. The work environment is constructive and positive, I really feel like I have a place here.
What I wish was different
If anything, I wish that I could be in contact with the actual St. Jude patients more often. Otherwise, this job has been great!
Advice
For this job, it's very important to be organized and open to feedback from your peers and higher ups. It's important to be patient, and have attention to detail.

Intern
May - July 2019 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
I loved my mentor and the experience I received. I learned a lot about the field I want to work in and what an average day in that career would look like.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to be more involved with the clinical aspect of my internship. All I could really do as an undergraduate student was watch.
Advice
Reach out to as many people as you can! My position wasn’t even through a program or anything. I just asked someone who was in the field I’m interested in if I could work with them and they set up a position for me. It never hurts to reach out to people about opportunities.

Information Services Intern

What I liked
The company atmosphere was unlike any other company I have worked with.
What I wish was different
The interns were split into 2 buildings, so we usually didn't get much time with the interns in the other building.
Advice
Enjoy the time you have at this company.

Student Researcher
May 2017 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
I loved learning new laboratory skills that will help me for the rest of my career. I also liked learning more about cancer. I'm so happy that I could contribute at least a little bit to finding treatments for cancer!
What I wish was different
The program that I participated in could have been a little more organized, but this was expected because of a change of program directors in the middle of my participation.
Advice
This is an amazing experience and people should take advantage of it!

Pediatric Oncology Education Program Intern
May - August 2018 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
I enjoyed being in a hospital setting while getting to make a small contribution to treatment planning. My project consisted of data analysis using coding to analyze a brain cancer protocol within the Radiation Oncology Department. I learned how to write programs using SAS, which I really enjoyed. I also got to spend a lot of time interacting with patients and shadowing doctors, which was a lot of fun! Additionally, we had speakers from all different areas of the hospital come speak to everyone in my during during lunch every day, so I got to learn about areas of the hospital outside of Radiation Oncology.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had taken better advantage of all that St. Jude has to offer and that I had shadowed more doctors in other areas of the hospital.
Advice
Take advantage of every opportunity! The program is incredible and provides you with the opportunity to work with doctors, patients, and other members of the St. Jude community. Take the time to sign up to shadow doctors in other areas, volunteer at patient events, and get to know the program's speakers.

Pediatric Oncology Education Intern
May - August 2017 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
Exposure to research and clinical work, as well as many volunteer opportunities. Everyday there was a presentation for us to attend and learn more about pediatric cancer and the research going on at St. Jude.
What I wish was different
I might have like a lab that better suited my research interests.
Advice
Take advantage of every shadowing experience, even if you don't like clinical medicine. It's important to see both sides.

Pediatric Oncology Education Program Research Assistant
May - July 2017 • Memphis, TN
What I liked
Through this internship experience, I received one-on-one mentorship by a faculty member at St. Jude. We worked closely on a summer research project, and I was able to submit a first-author publication on my research. Housing is provided, interns are paid, and I was able to build relationships with other bright interns with a passion for research.
What I wish was different
If I could add to this program, I would include more opportunities for students to directly work with the patients at St. Jude. However, several volunteer opportunities were provided.
Advice
I would advise a future intern to be direct, ask questions, and communicate with your mentor to get the most out of the experience. Furthermore, I would highly recommend building relationships with other students in the program who will go on to become future scientists and doctors.
