March 2018 - January 2019 • Orem, UT

What I liked

SpotterRF is making cutting edge technology to save lives. It get great getting to work everyday and knowing that the difference I was making was being used to help make the world a better place.

What I wish was different

I only wish that my coworkers there could be more appreciative of the hard work that management put into the company, especially since it is such a small company.

Advice

Work hard and find your own things to do, because there’s plenty, and they will love you for what you’re doing.

What I liked

One of my favorite things about working at Spotter has been having the chance to take on a lot of different responsibility in a lot of different areas. Spotter is a small enough company with few enough mechanical engineers (Myself and 1-2 others! The rest being EE or CS.) that I have had an excellent opportunity to step up and lead on a wide variety of different projects. This has greatly increased my confidence as an engineer and job candidate.

What I wish was different

Spotter is a growing company. It has been around for ten years, and is continuing to pick up pace in business growth and revenue. With that being said, at times, it has been a bit of a ride with management communicating clearly with employees. When I first arrived, for the first few months, there was a tangible distrust of some of the full-time employees toward management. Many felt like they couldn’t say the “wrong” thing, or there jobs could be jeopardized. This led to employees having a lot of negative vibes toward management. I would say this negative feeling or culture has been improved upon over the past year, but still lingers a bit. I have had a few very real moments when I’ve felt like I am disposable in their eyes when they are under stress with deadlines, and my school schedule doesn’t line up. However, overwhelmingly more often, I have felt needed and appreciated.

Advice

Utilize the career fairs to your advantage, and talk with companies you wouldn’t normally think to talk with.

Hardware Engineer Intern

September 2017 • Orem, UT

What I liked

Cool projects and technology. Lots of diversity in job tasks. (CAD, QA, Prototyping, Software, Testing etc..)

What I wish was different

Management was terrible. Little respect and loyalty to employees and lots of micromanaging.

Advice

Great to get a wide range of experience and try lots of different things. Makes for a good internship but I wouldn't recommend for a full-time job.

Advice

take every assignment as an opportunity to learn and to grow. it's ok to make mistakes but management will see your drive and effort and that is what matters to them.
