Marketing and Communications Intern

May - August 2022 • Durham, NC

What I liked

I had an incredible experience working for SMT last summer. I got the opportunity to work on a variety of projects including running the social media pages, helping to edit press releases, and take part in creative team meetings every week. With this, I had a lot of hands on experience and was able to meet people who worked outside of my team. Specifically through the intern lunch and learns I was able to meet the other SMT interns. Everyone was extremely welcoming and willing to help with anything.

What I wish was different

I wish at times that there would have been more overlap within the teams. I got extremely valuable experience in marketing and communications, but wish I would have been able to see more of what the other teams were doing on a day to day basis. It would have helped me to really understand all that SMT had to offer.

Advice

One piece of advice that I have is to really get to know everyone at SMT. The employees there are truly incredible and looking to get to know you outside of the office as mentors and friends. I am so lucky to have found an amazing mentor in my boss from the summer, and really think that had a lot to do with the fact that I wanted to create strong relationships with the people I was working with. Additionally, I will say to travel to any events you're offered. It was so valuable to travel and see SMT technology in person, and really helped me to better understand the company.

Operations Intern

May - August 2022 • Durham, NC

What I liked

The internship at SMT allowed me to see all of the different parts of the company and everything that goes into the broadcasting side of a sports game. I was lucky enough to travel and get to see in person the behind the scenes of a TV broadcast for a mixed martial arts event for a league called the PFL.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish had been different is that I wish there had been more hands-on experience as oppose to training videos and work to do on a computer. The in-person experiences that I got were extremely valuable and taught me so much about the business side of sports.

Advice

Don't be afraid to get into the TV side of sports even if you think you don't understand it. I thought I since I had no idea how everything on the TV side of sports worked that I may not be able to be an intern at SMT, but that was not true. They were very good about teaching me the basics of TV and getting me the tech knowledge that I needed to understand how everything worked.
