Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

The internship program as a whole; living at the WSU dorms with other interns. The advice and and education received from my mentor and other senior employees. I had many opportunities to tour the various manufacturing buildings and shadow other engineering disciplines. I felt like my project was important; and I felt like the workload was manageable. Benefits for interns was also great, including 401k, tuition reimbursement, and a housing stipend.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to complete my project; things can move at a glacial pace at a large company. The company culture and an inability to completely relate to full-time engineers (average age of an engineer at Spirit is 64) make me hesitant to return for a full time position. The location is also a major drawback.

Advice

Don't be put off by the location, its only for a few months. I definitely recommend living at Wichita State University with other interns. You'll have a far more social experience than finding an apartment, and Spirit covers the full cost.

Test engineer

June - August 2018 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Great people to work with, very good at creating an intern social environment after work. Also they give great tours of their facilities

What I wish was different

I wish there was more work for me to do there.

Advice

Wherever you intern always ask for more work if you have free time. It shows initiative.

Industrial Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I made great connections, had a job extremely applicable to my degree that added real value to the company, and had other great opportunities within my job such as presentations and tours.

What I wish was different

I didn't enjoy it because I realized that engineering wasn't what I wanted to do and switched degrees. But this has nothing to do with the internship, only my personal work preferences.

Advice

Ask alot of questions when you start your job. They're welcome early on. Don't wait until you should know better to ask the questions.
