I got to learn a lot of terminology of the transportation field.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have been outside of the office more.
Advice
Try to find internships that will allow you to explore all assets of being a civil engineer. Sitting behind a desk and performing the same task everyday of the summer will not be as helpful as being in a position where you can do a lot of different things.

Intern Technician
May - August 2023 • Saginaw, MI
What I liked
I loved the work culture and how helpful everyone was with anything I needed help with. It was very different from working here compared to my past experiences. If I was on the elevator with someone who I didn't know, nine times out of ten, they introduced themselves to me and asked where I worked. I talked to quite a few people from different departments that way. This will become very helpful in the future if I decide to work for Spicer in a different department than I did for my internship.
My managers and the other technicians within my department were also very kind and helpful. If I was on a new job, whoever the other technician was that I worked with, they were helping me along the way and explaining different things about the project that I wouldn't have known otherwise. This really made me enjoy going to different projects to see the different types of work that Spicer does.
What I wish was different
Because of the project schedules for this past summer (2023) I was unable to be on a specific project the whole time. I jumped around a lot, which was nice because I got to see a lot of different things, but I was unable to see a project go through different stages. The longest I was on a project was 3 or 4 days, so I didn't really see much within those few days. I would have liked to see at least one project go through different stages of construction.
Advice
Honestly, don't be afraid to ask questions and speak up for yourself. My managers at Spicer were very understanding when I had either a lot of questions about something or if I ever felt uncomfortable with doing something by myself. If you don't communicate that stuff with them, they are not going to know, and they won't be able to help you.
