Specialized Engineering

Field Technician Intern

June - August 2020 • Frederick, MD

What I liked

Getting to work at a variety of job sites. Getting to be independent and feel like the work I was doing directly influenced the project I was working at.

What I wish was different

A little more opportunity for teaming or guidance. The first few times on a site alone were stressful. Also, the tasks required at each job site began to feel repetitive by the end of the summer.

Advice

It’s a great opportunity to learn about what actually happens in the construction industry while in the field, but know that the job will likely feel repetitive as you will be performing the same tests every day. What you put into the job is what you get out - you can get by fine doing the minimum by performing your tests but you won’t learn much, or you can put in the effort to understand what’s happening around you and ask questions if you want to learn.
