Student Engineer - Kinetics

March 2019 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed being given a lot of hands-on work because I learn the best by doing hands-on work. I also liked the work environment because it was flexible with my schedule and I liked everyone I worked with.

What I wish was different

There is nothing I wish that had been different.

Advice

You should not expect to be perfect. The only way to fill in the gap between being a beginner and being an expert is to fail and ask questions. If you mess up, it doesn't matter because everyone makes mistakes.

Student Engineer

May - August 2019 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

Well known company. Paid for housing.

What I wish was different

Wish housing was closer to work. Wish I was given more challenging projects. There were no projects for me once I started, so I sat around alot.

Advice

Be careful of what team you will work with. Ask about the current projects that you will participate in.

Student Engineer

July 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

Access to great equipment and large budget for materials. Professional technicians on staff to build designs and solder, freeing time for research and design. Friendly and capable staff engineers are more than willing to help if you ask.

What I wish was different

Projects are confidential so student involvement is very low due to required operational security procedures. Staff engineers in my division are often unable to communicate due to work load.

Advice

Each department in each division operates differently. No two students will have the same experience. Apply to all available jobs in your major and communicate with divisions you might be more interested in once acclimated. Often times they will transfer you.

Student Engineer

June 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

Was fun, lots of projects

What I wish was different

Some divisions are great when it comes to working with students, some aren't so great. Despite that, all divisions have a lot of good going on and are worth working for.

Advice

Apply for everything, don't worry if it's not amazing, its all for the experience and you'll find something that fits you eventually, especially at SwRI.
