Student Director of Sustainability
July 2021 • Ashland, OR
What I liked
I love this job! It is really nice to be able too be in a leadership role in a group that I have already been apart of for a couple years. I started as an intern and am now the student director. My favorite part of the job is doing the EDI training/research. We have weekly staff meetings and every other week we focus on an EDI topic that I prepare for the team. It has been amazing having these important and difficult conversations with my team. I think it really helps us look at every area of our work through an Equity lens, which is something that is important for not only a sustainability team, but also for SOU as a whole.
What I wish was different
I think just being able to start the year in-person was the only thing that I wish had been different. We had a lot more orientation activities/team building activities planned that we were unable to do because of COVID and having to start the term online. Other than that there is not much that I want to change!
Advice
A big thing about being in a leadership role (especially if it is your first one) is just believing in yourself and being confident in your ability to succeed. I had a bunch of anxiety going into this since it was my first time in this kind of leadership position, but as I went on and continued to have my team tell me how much they enjoy and appreciate the work I do, I realized a lot of my anxiety was coming from me not thinking I was good enough. Being able to realize your worth will definitely help make a job like this a lot more enjoyable.

Service Center
September 2018 • Ashland, OR
What I liked
I love the atmosphere of working on campus, and the flexibility that comes with the job. My boss is very understanding that my time at the university is as a student first, and employee second. People are very friendly and open and the job gives me good business experience.
What I wish was different
I wish I could work more hours, but as a student I'm limited to only 20 a week.
Advice
Never be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something. Learning new things and getting used to a new job can take time, and there's no shame is making sure you understand everything you're supposed to be doing. People are more often than not very willing to help you.

Conference Assistant
June - September 2018 • Ashland, OR
What I liked
I loved working with individuals from all around the world, who were coming to Southern Oregon University's campus to stay. The job consisted of checking in numerous groups to the rooms they paid for (similar to a hotel business) and helping them with anything they needed.
What I wish was different
I wish the job would have been offered during the school year (with the same pay), because I found it very interesting and would have loved to continue on longer!
Advice
Always make sure to get enough rest, self-care is so incredibly important, and make sure to drink water every day. Some days you could be hiking up many stairs, and other days could be sitting around in an office waiting for guests to call!

Short Summer Program Group Leader
August - September 2018 • Ashland, OR
What I liked
I was able to meet Japanese students from 5 different schools and practice Japanese while gaining experience in leading a group of 32 students. We all visited various locations in southern Oregon most of which I had not even been to despite living here for over 3 years.
What I wish was different
The program was short, only about 3 weeks, so I wish I had talked more with the students when we had breaks and down time.
Advice
I had kept my schedule organized to the hour the whole time, it really kept my mind focused and gave me a quick reminder of what I was doing and when everyday.
