It was a chance to conduct my own original research in my field of study, but beyond that, I was able to do field work in my chosen career field. Both of those are things an undergraduate student, especially an underclassmen, rarely get to do.

I wish I could have been there longer!
Advice
If you find a program you are really interested, apply for it! So many things go into the decisions of who gets the internship, and you may have a bigger chance than you think.
